The Jogja Heritage Week 2001 organized by the Jogja Forum for Culture Environment Conservation, a network of various heritage groups from NGO/NPO, government, universities, and private sectors.

From Merapi Mountain to the South Sea, there are various forms of Jogja heritage. The mixed of natural and cultural shapes the region of Jogja into a cultural center. A magnificent cultural center as expressed by temples, palaces, traditional houses, kampung, villages, dances, batik, traditional culinary, crafts, traditional music, crafts, gamelan, traditional trees, costumes, traditional living culture, and many other unmanaged heritage.

Many people are concern of unmanaged heritage in the future, which are predicted to be disappeared. These concerned are that they do not know what to do, and how to express their thought as well as to realize the conservation actions. On the other hand, there are demands on the collaboration among various disciplines such as architects with artists, archaeologists and civil engineers, foresters with planners, and the like.

The Jogja Forum for Culture Environment Conservation was established to accommodate those abovementioned needs and provided as communication media for those concerned people and heritage organizations in Jogja. The vision of this forum is to build the civic heritage movement by enhance the community awareness on the importance of natural and cultural heritage conservation in Jogja in answering the time's challenges. The actions in the year 2000 - 2002:

  • Organize monthly workshops March to July 2001, and to form a legally binding natural and cultural heritage conservation council with working groups on the latest conservation issues. This council will become partner and make recommendations to the government in managing the culture heritage resources.
  • Organize Jogja Heritage Week, August 2001, to increase the heritage conservation awareness in Jogja.
  • Organize Jogja Heritage Year along the Year 2002, to rethinking heritage resources for the future of Jogja in 2102.

The Jogja Heritage Week had been successfully organized on August 4 - 8, 2001 in Pagelaran Kraton Yogyakarta. The theme is building heritage communities and awareness. More than 40 heritage organizations/institutions from NGO, universities, government or private sectors have participated in this program. The program supported by Royal Netherlands Embassy, Provincial Government of Yogyakarta, various government agencies, private sectors, self financed by participants as well as individuals (donators). The whole program that consists of pre-heritage week, heritage week, and post heritage week were organized by more than 100 members of organizing committee that most of them are young generation/students. There are a lot of positive responses from the Jogja citizen as well as mass media. The articles in the newspapers are attached.

The Jogja Heritage Week 2001 had just finished. The organizing committee under the Jogja Forum Working Group on Dissemination and Community Participation, however, has to start to organize the up coming program, Jogja Heritage Year 2002. The theme will be building civic movements on heritage conservation. As Jogja Forum is proposed to be managed by and for the local community within conservation areas, the forum should be an effective media for networking among neighborhood heritage groups and other private - public stakeholders, and should encourage innovative community initiatives. Instead of organizing the Jogja Heritage Year 2002, some other programs will strategically be organized, as follows:
